Spanning 148 hectares on the slopes of Tai Mo Shan, the Kadoorie Farm and Botanic Garden was founded in 1956 by the Kadoorie brothers to aid poor farmers. Today, it functions as a major conservation, education center, and wildlife rescue hub featuring lush terraced gardens, streams, and woodland trails

Alex and Alta Kadoorie share a profound and enduring commitment to the mission of Kadoorie Farm and Botanic Garden (KFBG) and to its three core programmes: nature conservation, holistic education, and sustainable living. Together, these principles reflect a deeply held belief that humanity’s relationship with the natural world must be one of respect, stewardship, and responsibility.

KFBG’s work continues to evolve in response to an increasingly complex environmental landscape. Through rigorous, science-based conservation, ecosystem restoration, education, and the advancement of sustainable practices, the organisation seeks not only to protect biodiversity, but also to inspire new ways of thinking about how people may live more thoughtfully and harmoniously with nature. Its impact extends well beyond its remarkable home on the slopes of Tai Mo Shan, reaching communities and conservation initiatives throughout Hong Kong, the Greater Bay Area, and the wider Indo-Burma region.

This commitment is firmly rooted in an extraordinary family legacy. In 1951, Lawrence and Horace Kadoorie established the Kadoorie Agricultural Aid Association in response to the profound human needs confronting post-war Hong Kong. Their philosophy was both simple and consequential: wealth carried with it a sacred responsibility to benefit others. Through agricultural training, livestock programmes, micro-loans, infrastructure development, and practical assistance, thousands of families were given the means not merely to receive aid, but to rebuild their livelihoods with dignity and independence.

From those beginnings emerged an institution whose purpose has expanded while its fundamental values have remained constant. Today, KFBG brings together conservation, education, sustainable agriculture, wildlife rescue, native-plant restoration, community engagement, and responsible approaches to food and living. The Green Hub at the historic Old Tai Po Police Station and the Kadoorie Centre – Food Hub represent further expressions of this continuing commitment to demonstrating that sustainability can be both practical and transformative.

For Alex and Alta Kadoorie, support for KFBG represents far more than stewardship of an institution. It is the continuation of a philosophy handed from one generation to the next: that privilege brings responsibility; that knowledge should be shared; and that the natural world entrusted to us must be protected for generations yet to come.

The legacy established by Lawrence and Horace Kadoorie continues not simply through remembrance, but through action—evolving with the needs of our time while remaining faithful to the enduring principle upon which it was founded: service to people, stewardship of nature, and responsibility for our common future.
