The Lyda Louise Moore Endowment for the Arts

Throughout her life, Lyda Louise Moore, a woman who embodied the finest traditions of grace, cultivation, and refinement, regarded herself first and foremost as a lifelong student of the arts.

Her particular love of ballet held a cherished place in that lifelong pursuit. She found in its discipline, movement, music, and extraordinary precision an expression of beauty that could be appreciated more deeply through knowledge. Mrs. Moore often described herself not simply as a patron, but as both patron and student—believing that the privilege of supporting the arts carried with it an equally important responsibility to understand them.

Over the course of her long and distinguished life, that sense of wonderment matured into a remarkable breadth of knowledge. Her appreciation extended across artistic disciplines, generations, and cultural traditions. For Mrs. Moore, the arts were never merely objects to be admired or performances to be attended; they were an enduring course of study—a means through which history, culture, beauty, and the human experience could be more fully understood.

In recognition of her lifelong devotion, The Moore Family Trust Foundation is honored each August to provide support through the Lyda Louise Moore Endowment for the Arts.

This annual endowment reflects her enduring legacy and her conviction that the arts must be experienced, studied, preserved, and passed forward. Through its support of artists, cultural institutions, education, and artistic excellence, the Endowment honors a woman whose patronage was informed by knowledge, whose knowledge deepened her appreciation, and whose appreciation never lost its capacity for wonder.

Lyda Lousie Moore

Lyda Louiss Moore is a descendant of North Carolina’s historic Moore family, one of the most influential colonial families in the Cape Fear region. The Moore legacy was built upon leadership, public service, military distinction, and extensive landholdings that helped shape the development of southeastern North Carolina.

By the late eighteenth century, the Moore family had become among the largest landowners in the region, holding vast tracts of prime agricultural, timber, and riverfront lands throughout Brunswick, New Hanover, and surrounding counties. Their influence extended far beyond their estates, playing a pivotal role in the political, judicial, military, and economic foundations of colonial and early American North Carolina. (Wikipedia⁠)

Among the family’s most distinguished members were Colonel Maurice Moore, founder of Brunswick Town and a principal leader in the settlement of the Lower Cape Fear; General James Moore, a Revolutionary War hero and the first commander of North Carolina’s Continental forces, whose leadership at the Moore’s Creek campaign helped secure the colony for the Patriot cause; Judge Maurice Moore, an outspoken opponent of the Stamp Act and an early advocate for American liberties; and Justice Alfred Moore, who became an Associate Justice of the Supreme Court of the United States, representing one of North Carolina’s earliest and most distinguished contributions to the nation’s highest court.
