The Oak Spring Foundation

The most valuable treasures in life are often those discovered unexpectedly.

Among them was the enduring friendship between Rachel “Bunny” Lambert Mellon and our Founder and Chairman, Randal G. Moore. For many years, Mr. Moore and Mrs. Mellon were neighbors in Oyster Harbors, Massachusetts, their summer residences set side by side overlooking the Atlantic Ocean.

During the season, it was not uncommon for Mrs. Mellon to arrive with a potted plant from her greenhouse or a bundle of freshly cut hydrangeas—simple yet thoughtful gestures that reflected her deep passion for horticulture. These visits were often accompanied by spirited conversation, as she eagerly shared her perspectives on gardening and any subject she deemed worthy of discussion.

Over time, this friendship extended beyond Oyster Harbors to Oak Spring in Virginia, where the Oak Spring Garden Library stands as a testament to Mrs. Mellon’s extraordinary legacy. The Library has produced a distinguished series of four award-winning catalogs—An Oak Spring Sylva (1989), An Oak Spring Pomona (1990), An Oak Spring Flora (1997), and An Oak Spring Herbaria (2009)—each documenting rare books, manuscripts, and works of art from her renowned collection. First editions from this series were later included in the Moore Library, serving as both a source of knowledge and a lasting tribute to a meaningful friendship.

Oak Spring and its gardens became a place of quiet retreat during the off-season—a setting where enduring memories were formed, removed from the rhythm of coastal summers.

Today, The Moore Family Trust Foundation continues to support the Oak Spring Garden Foundation, honoring not only its cultural and scholarly contributions, but also the legacy of a cherished friendship that remains deeply valued.
