To honor Richard Wagner's legacy and revitalize the local economy after World War II, the town established the Ravello Festival (popularly known as the "Wagner Festival") in 1953. It has since grown into one of Europe's most prestigious annual summer music and arts festivals.

Ravello's identity as a musical haven is deeply tied to the German composer Richard Wagner. Exhausted and looking for inspiration to finish his final opera, Parsifal, Wagner climbed up to Ravello on a mule in May 1880.
When he stepped into the lush, cliffside gardens of the 13th-century Villa Rufolo, he was so spellbound by the beauty that he declared he had finally found the magical, fictional garden of Klingsor (the opera's antagonist). He famously wrote in the villa's guestbook:
"The magical garden of Klingsor has been found." This historic connection permanently intertwined Ravello with the world of classical music.
